Obtaining a UK enhanced police check

I am about to start work in a swiss school and want to get what would be a UK DBS enhanced check done (because I worked and studied there). Only that it's not possible, because neither I nor the employer are UK based.

Has anyone come across this issue in gaining swiss employment for a job like teaching and what solutions might there be?

I already have the Swiss police check but would UK issues show up there if the Swiss were made aware of it?

Thanks for any help you can offer...

(could also apply for the "education forum"...)

Re: Obtaining a UK enhanced police check

Interesting question. Would have been wise to do CRB check in the UK prior to coming- hope you find the answer. Did the school not require you to do this in the UK before giving you the job?

You can't if you're not resident in the UK.

I need a disclosure every 3 years as working with children… but just provide the Swiss one, even though I've lived in the UK most of my life.

Yes, it's always seemed a bit of a loophole. Come to CH to work in a job not requiring CRB, then move to another one using the Swiss criminal records extract and effectively any criminal history from your country of origin is no longer visible to your employer.

As a parent and grand-parent and ex teacher- I find this quite disturbing.

Re: Obtaining a UK enhanced police check

I am not sure how they did it but when I was a scout leader ( British scouts) in Belgium all parents had to have a CRB check done if they attended camps, helped out at meetings Etc. They were also required to get the brlgian form too.

The forms were all sent off to the UK and obviously had Belgian addresses on them ( plus previous addresses in the previous years - can't remember how many). The certificates were sent back by post to the individuals so clearly a none UK address wasn't an issue.

Both OH and I got them and we hadn't lived in the UK for over fifteen years at the time.

Unfortunately no use to the OP:

Quote:
Can I use the ACRO Police Certificate for employment purposes or for security checks?

No, the ACRO Police Certificate can only be used for submission to the relevant embassy, high commission, consulate or other authority.

Re: Obtaining a UK enhanced police check

What do I do if the country I want to go to is not mentioned on the application form? We will provide a Police Certificate for any country but cannot offer a refund if the embassy, high commission, consulate or other organisation refuses to accept the Police Certificate.

We suggest you contact the relevant authority for the country you would like to apply to for a visa. If they confirm that they will accept the Police Certificate, select the relevant country from the drop down on the application form if you are applying online, or add the country to the section marked ‘Country to which you are travelling’ under ‘Other’ if you are completing a paper application.

I have read all of the above FAQs but I have not been able to find the answer to my question. What should I do?

If the information you seek is not provided above, please contact the ACRO Customer Services Team, who will be happy to assist you with your query.

Re: Obtaining a UK enhanced police check

Here you go, OP:

Quote:
Applicants (job candidates) can’t do a criminal records check on themselves. Instead, they can request a ‘basic disclosure’ from Disclosure Scotland (you don’t have to be from Scotland to do this).

If your current address is outside the UK then please apply using the paper application form

Re: Obtaining a UK enhanced police check

I have the answer... after much work and lots of phone calls...

There's all sorts of convoluted information from the DBS about using the NI or Scottish service but I called them both and they both confirmed that they can't help - either through an "umbrella organisation" (who are meant to act as go to companies for once off requests) or otherwise. I also called the umbrella organisations direct and they confirmed as much.

What you need is here:
https://www.acro.police.uk/ICPC/

An "International Child Protection Certificate". I called them too and they confirmed that they basically provide the DBS enhanced service but for non-UK residents (even if you're non-British like me) applying for schools abroad. He hesitated a bit when I asked the difference between this and the DBS checks, but I got the sense that it is a minor technical difference rather than something big. In any case, it is at least clear that it is intended for teachers working abroad.

On a side point, I also got an enhanced DBS check done when I was living abroad, in respect of the UK Uni where I did my teacher training. I think I had to get all sorts of prove of address sent to my brothers to get around the non-resident point.

Always nice to be able to tie up a thread hey
