Annoying work permit process - need help

Hi all,

I'm a non-EU person in UK. Recently my Hr told me that my work permit ( along with my wife) has been approved and said that I should pick up my entry visa from Switzerland embassy in London.

When I contacted the embassy here they asked me to get a visa authorisation letter when I visit them. However I haven't received any such letter even after 3 weeks of the approval. When my Hr contacted the canton authorities they mentioned that they dispatched the letter directly to the embassy in London, but the Embassy guys say they haven't received any letter yet. I wonder what the exact process is. Can someone explain me the actual process to get my entry visa.

Also, my Hr told that both our permits have been approved. But today the London embassy officer told that my wife's details are not entered into the system and her authorisation has not been approved. Does that mean that my wife's permit has not been approved at all ?? I have mailed the canton authorities and waiting for their reply.

Thanks,
Kris.

Re: Annoying work permit process - need help

From what I understand of the process, once your work permit is fully approved by canton+federal then after a little while you are registered as being eligible for the entry visa in the "system". We didn't need to bring anything to get the the visa except our passports - the embassy staff were able to look it up - but you do need to confirm with them that the visa is ready before you show up.

If your permit is approved then your wife's approval is generally just a formality. Normally they are processed together but maybe your work didn't submit them together, they were separated at some point, or your permit isn't really fully through the process yet.

It doesn't seem like anything is wrong - unfortunately you probably just need to wait and keep checking for the status. It isn't always clear what is going on because the approval needs to be passed around from the local to federal authorities which takes time. In the meantime your company receives approval letters from the different departments which can be frustratingly deceiving if your company doesn't have a lot of experience with the process (and probably sometimes even if they do). Do you know if your company has gotten the approval letters from both canton and federal level?

Re: Annoying work permit process - need help

Thanks Ivan37.

My HR has received approval letters from canton and federal authorities. She has even forwarded them to me which I have mailed to the embassy in London. But it seems that those were not the required documents.

My HR is also clueless on what that required document is and the embassy people are clueless if they will/should receive any authorisation letter from the canton without which they cannot stamp a entry visa.

Also I have no idea why my wife's permit is not yet authorised and seems even mine is pending. I guess I should wait till the HR is back in office next week and contact her.

Did you apply at the embassy for the Type D entry visa in the first place? This should have been done at the embassy at the same time as your potential employer applied for approval to hire you. If you haven't applied for the visas then I doubt they can be issued without the necessary paperwork.

Well, according to the procedure laid out here - which is the Federal Migration Office website - they should be applied for as part of the application submission.

Application submission
The employer
Submits the relevant application documents to the cantonal employment service. Depending on the case or canton that is competent to examine applications, applications are to be submitted to the migration agency of the given canton.
Workers from nations subject to visa requirement are requested to apply for a visa with the local Swiss diplomatic representation abroad.

Nothing there about waiting until the approval is already given.
