Translating marriage certificate from french?

Hi,

This might sound like a stupid question.

I'm coming to Zurich in September for a job and my wife if joining me. She will stay at home first few months and maybe look for a job later on. We are both EU17.

The marriage certificate is in french, since the wedding took place in Belgium. I asked at the municipality (in Belgium) if they provide it in German and got an angry look

Should I translate it in German before arriving in Zurich or would they accept it in french?

Thanks!

Since French is one if the official languages of Switzerland in theory they should accept the French version of your certificate. I would give it to them when they ark for it and see what they say.
Our certucates were all in English and the commune here had no problem with that when we registered here.

Thanks a lot, I'll give it a try! Worst case, my wife can stay as a "tourist" for a while until registering

Yes, and German is one of the official languages of Belgium.

Some years ago I brought a case in the Betreibungsamt in Frauenfeld. I submitted all the papers in French, not willing to write in schoolboy German. As it turned out neither the magistrate nor the defendant firm's CFO spoke French or English so the hearing was conducted in the lowest common denominator of my German. But somebody on the Court staff (not anybody I met) must have understood my correct legal French enough to schedule the case. Which I won by concession since the defendant had no defence.

Both Switzerland and Belgium are parties to the Convention on the Issue of Multilingual Extracts from Civil Status Records, so Belgium has an obligation to issue you a respective multilingual marriage certificate, and Switzerland should recognize it without any further translations and formalities.

Translate it yourself, I did mine. No one is checking it. It's just a tick box bureaucratic exercise. Good luck!

Re: Translating marriage certificate from french?

Thanks everybody. I'll head to the municipality here in Belgium tomorrow to ask again (since I'm here). If they refuse explicitly, I'll give it a try to register in french.
