Obtaining AVS numbers for family

Hi,
We moved into Switzerland in April after being G permit holders (frontaliers) for 11 years. The B permits are in the process of being issued, shouldn't be long now, and we have taken a health insurance (also waiting for the final no. assuré)
My son is in special care here and they've asked for his AVS number. Who issues this? Will it just arrive at our house automatically after the B permit. He was born in Switzerland but has never lived here. Do I need to go somewhere to ask for one with some papers?
Thank you

It is written on the health insurance card but since you haven't got that yet that's not a very helpful answer.
The health insurance company will know what it is however as will the permit issuing office so maybe try contacting one of them and asking them.

Here is the office you need to contact in Geneva.

Re: Obtaining AVS numbers for family

Thank you. Is it the health insurance company that organizes it then?

It seems from your answer I don't need to do anything to have it issued, just try and find it?

No it's the cantonal 'social security' ( for want of a better word) office which issues it ( automatically) but if you're not employed the medical insurance card is the easiest place to find it. For employees it's easy as you can just ask your employer.

Actually, the employer gets the AHV number from the employee...

My husband definitely got his from his employer and the link I posted says that employees should get the number from the employer.

I guess if you change jobs you simply give your number to your new employer as you're already in the system.

Ah, yes when you come new, it is with all likelyhood the responsibility of the employer to request the number From the AHV authorities. I was thinking of when the number already exist. Then the employee has to provide it to the employer.

Nope, the employer has to request it from the cantonal authorities.

Even for Swiss people.

Yes me and my husband have ours from the employer. But my question was more for the kids and where theirs comes from.

From the AHV office - that is the AI in Suisse Romande. If you are already on the system, the kids will be too. Ring them up and have your number close to hand. We were sent the whole family's numbers within a couple of months of registering from the AI office, each one printed onto a credit card style thing.

Re: Obtaining AVS numbers for family

And a short note, your health insurer won't know the number until your permit is processed and ready. They can't print the insurance card without, which their system automatically receives from the goverment database
