EU Citizen - Permit B holder - Registration of spouse + children

Hello,

I have moved to Geneva in March for professional reasons, and the company I work for has now obtained a permit B for 5 years for me. In the next step, I would like to move my wife and children to Switzerland. At the same time, I intend to relocate from Geneva to the Nyon area.

I have two questions:
  • can I register them in Geneva without any problems? If so what is required and how much does it cost? The only information that I found was that I have to have an appropriate apartment with sufficient space for my family. Is this right? If so, how much would be required for a family consisting of 5 people (3 of which are children)?
  • If we decide to move to Nyon. Where do I have to register them, and what do I need?

Thank you for your support in advance.

This will give you some info:

https://www.ch.ch/en/family-reunification-eu-efta/

You may need to show your employment contract or payslips so they know you can afford to support them all once they move over. You'll need to pay for their permits, similar cost to yours I assume.

Now for the moving bit. Firstly, with 3 kids, depending on their ages, you'll need 3/4 bedrooms. Assuming that one is 8+ and the other two younger a few years younger then 3 bedrooms should do as the younger two can share. One for the parents, one for the older child and one for the youngsters to share. Of course if you want people to stay with you when visiting, then you'll need to look for 4 so as to have a spare bedroom for them when they come.

Secondly, if you're planning to move then I'd do that before bringing the family over providing you can arrange the move quickly. Why? Because you'll have to pay Geneva for their permits and then you'll have to do it all over again for the whole family when you change canton/commune so could get expensive.

This is where you need to go to register - don't forget to deregister from Geneva as well.

You'll need birth certificates for everyone and your marriage certificate - all less than 6 months old so you may need to order more copies.

I don't understand this bit?

I've used our original marriage and birth certificates a number of times for this sort of thing, and they don't have any sort of "expiry" date on them.

Me neither. I can't remember if I even showed my birth and marriage certificate when I moved over, but that was before the Free Movement agreement.

Best check with Nyon migration office to make sure what documents are required.

It's not that the certificates have an expiration date. It's that the Swiss authorities (sometimes?) request to have recently issued certificates.

When I moved here in 2010, I needed an official birth certificate that had been issued within the last 6 months. They would not accept the official one that was issued a decade prior, and looked exactly the same except the issue date. This was in Bern.

Well if you're British then it's easy enough to do.

Simply set up and account and order what you need. They'll be delivered within a few weeks. Great for those doing ancestry stuff too.

Thank you very much for the extensive answer! In terms of the costs, I did not have to pay anything, as the company did that for me. How much would it be to register my wife and 3 kids in Nyon, approx.?

I would guess around 80-100 francs each, but use the link for Nyon that I provided; there's an e-mail link there so you could ask them.
