Buying a car when moving canton

I did search but didn't find the answer....

I am moving from kanton ZH to kanton AG officially on 1st of July (date on the contract but we will get the keys on the 24th of June.)

I am looking to buy a car because it will make the move much easier and the garage weren't sure the best way to go about it because of the move. So I have some questions...( I have never owned a car in CH so don't have any number plates yet).

1. Is it worth registering a car in ZH for 1-2 weeks?
2. Can I officially de-register from ZH early and register in AG early?
3. Do I need a residence permit in order to register the car in AG or can I just give them the address for insurance and the STVA use that?

I know I can wait until after the move but that doesn't make sense. Any help appreciated. Thanks.

Re: Buying a car when moving canton

You will likely have to register it where you are registered. They may want to see the permit.

But don't worry, you can move very easily.....then you have your Achtung Gefahr declaration

My wife is already devastated at the thought of an AG plate, being born and bread in ZH She's worried her family will disown her.

OK, then you could just deregister early, provided you have an address.

Great, I will head down to the Gemeindehaus tomorrow and see what they say. I can also try to check to see if I can register early in AG as we have the rental contract already just dated in advance.

Re: Buying a car when moving canton

I did it in SZ with a Wohnsitzbestatigung 10 years ago but Ticino required the permit......so check with AG as to what they need.....

You could just stick with ZH so that people think you can drive?

I only got my license changed last year after 9 years not driving at all, so an AG plate is probably the right one

Yes, as was the case with me, but I had a B at the time, so I kept my ZH plates for 1/2 year.

The other option was to put my bike and car in my wife's name, but that would have meant higher insurance.

But as OP has a C, there will be no problem.

Remember that an AG registration fits best on a car like this

Re: Buying a car when moving canton

For completeness:-

You can unregister in your current place 14 days before you move, and also register in the new place 14 days before you move. This means you get the wohnsitzbestätigung and register the car before you are actually living in the new canton. Slight problem is that they post it to the new address before you are actually there, but this is a mere detail

Can the post office hold on to your mail for a few days, until you moved?

Do they provide these when registering - or do they get mailed to you once you actually arrive?

Post what?

I always have gotten the documents, plates and bill directly at the STVA, never by post.

Sorry, only just seen the thread, but a belated, "this is what we did".

However, for us it was the other way around - we were told a 2 week window either side of the move. So we moved in late Dec 2010, and were able to "back-register" to that date in early January 2011 when everything was open again.

The result was that we paid (lower) taxes for whole of 2010 in the new Kanton, even though we'd only moved in on 23rd Dec.

The "Wohnsitzbestätigung" that you need to take to the STVA, as it proves you are now in the canton.

Yes it is a 2-week window either side of the move. Unfortunately the tax will work the other way for me

I'm pretty sure I picked up our license plates at the post office - and they weren't supposed to hand them over to me until I turned in the old ones. The deal was, though, that the old ones were German, we were not yet in our house nor had any access to tools, and at times I fit into the useless woman stereotype when it comes to doing things I don't want to do - so I convinced the woman at the post office to allow me to take the plates with me to a garage who could then swap them out for me.

I may have left my passport with her to assure I would come back, but I was quite (pleasantly) surprised at how reasonable the woman at the post office was. In Germany, there is no way they would have given in-at least that was my experience with similar bureaucratic matters while living there!
