For how long can one live in Switzerland while working in London?

Hello everyone!

We're getting married next month and I have been offered a great opportunity in Switzerland. Timing eh?! Needless to say, the last couple of weeks I've spent more time on this forum than doing any wedding prep!

My boyfriend loves his job in London but is willing to "test the waters in Switzerland" with me. He spoke to his boss and agreed to do a placement in his company's offices in Zurich for one year, staying on the London payroll. Based on this, I accepted the job offer and gave notice to my current employer with the plan of trying it out for this year and then re-evaluate.

However, after speaking to the HR department of his company he was told that he can't stay in Zurich/out of London for more than 6 months. I'm trying to find some sources to cross reference that, and also a possible way that we can stay for the whole year together in Zurich. It's going to be our first married year after all.

After the six months, if he was to take unpaid leave or sabbatical from his company could he stay in Switzerland as my spouse, or he wouldn't be allowed because he'd still be in a UK contract?

In addition, his company's private health insurance doesn't cover him in Zurich. Can we still pay health insurance for the time he'll be living here?

Thanks a lot in advance for your help.

Not sure why he wouldn't be allowed to be out of London for more than 6 months... Unless he's non-EU and on some sort of work visa in the UK?

If he's living in Switzerland he will be required to have Swiss health insurance.

Thanks Island Monkey!
We're both EU nationals.

I also can't understand why they told him this, especially since his manager is happy for him to be working remotely.

Maybe it's company policy that you can only work elsewhere for 6 months?

Nothing to do with Switzerland though. Switzerland doesn't care if you have a UK contract or not. All you need to get a residence permit in Switzerland as EU citizen, is proof that you can support yourself. So a work contract etc, substantial savings or you can be a dependant of your spouse (you could support him on your earnings).

This is exactly the info I was looking for, but I do want to make sure I understand.

I am an EU national, employed by my own company in South Africa. I will be continuing with that employment while in Switzerland, and my salary will be deposited to my Swiss account. It is adequate to cover my living costs as well as the kids school fees etc. I will also bring some savings with me to pay for apt deposits, upfront school fees etc but I will only do that AFTER I get my B permit, and thus my Swiss bank account.

The idea is that after we settle, I will open up a Swiss company and transfer some of the IP to it, but that is a medium- term plan, and not much to do with getting the B permit.

Is that enough to expect to get a B permit with no issues?

Thanks very much for this! He's going to talk to the HR department again to find out how much he can extend his stay in Zurich. I'll keep you up to date, if they say something else, apart from company policy.

It shouldn't be too difficult since you're EU. As you won't have a Swiss account at the start, you may need to show bank statements proving you have enough funds to support yourself and your family.

It's all about your company having to pay tax and social contributions in two countries.
