Family reunification visa-How long is the actual processing time?

Hello All,

I will be working as a postdoc in University of Zurich and I just got my authorization entry from canton of zurich in which the university applied directly there. While It seems that i will get the visa in couple of days, however, somehow, the canton and the university said that my family have to apply by themselves at swiss embassy in Japan. The embassy said it will take couple of months to get the result.

Does anybody know how long the processing time really is?anybody has similar situation? after searching online i found 8-10 weeks seems the official processing time. However, i will be really glad if anybody can share their actual processing time as i have to start my job in 9 weeks from now. I wonder whether we can make it in time or not.

Thank you very much in advance for your help!

My personal time was 3 weeks. However, I am from Canada and the Swiss seem to be soft on Canadians immigrating. We have special dispensations for post secondary training in undergrad (in Japan, you need to be in grad school for the same visa) and we (along with the US) can get a C-permit after 5 years residence as opposed to 10 for everyone else. That may have something to do with how fast it was.

Really? IŽd check that as it is 5 years for EU citizens and 10 years for non EU citizens and not vice versa.

You're both right, sort of. Americans and Canadians can apply for a C-permit after 5 years, but it's not guaranteed you'll get it. Most other non-EUs it's 10 years. EU it's pretty much guaranteed as long as you have a job. I'm American and got my C-permit after 5 years.

Good for you!

I do not think, however, that with the upcoming changes this will still be the case in future?

Its a pretty explicit exception, anywhere online that mentions the 10-year number will also mention the 5-year US/CA exception. Obviously it wont be as easy as an EU but it doesnt seem like it should be less likely for me to get a permit C after 5 years than OP after 10 years?
