Help for advising the process of applying B-permit in Lausanne

Hello all,

I'm a Chinese citizen working in France and holds a French PhD degree in computer science. Now I got an offer ("experienced researcher") from a spin-off in EPFL working for an Europeen Marie Curie joint research project for 2 years. So, I'm preparing the documents for a B permit in Lausanne.

I'm curious about the probability of accept since I'm going to resign the current job.. I've to evaluate the risk of doing that.

Someone told me that it is rare to be rejected since it is an europeen research project and it does not take the quota of each canton. Is this correct?

Any response is appreciated, thanks a lot.

You

It's getting harder and harder now for extra EU, even within research projects.

I seriously doubt you'd be granted a B permit. Most probably a L, if they accept you at all.

Don't resign until you have confirmation that you'll be getting a permit here. Otherwise, you could be left with no job at all.

Re: Help for advising the process of applying B-permit in Lausanne

From my experience, researchers working at federal universities (like EPFL) have a better chance of getting B permits than those working for cantonal universities. For instance, I am a postdoc at EPFL working on a B permit (granted only last year), and every other ex-EU postdoc in the group also has a B permit. In the contrary, all the postdocs I know who work at UNIL have only been granted L permits. I think the federal status of EPFL gives them a bit more negotiating power. That being said, I'm not sure how this somewhat-detatched project would work. If your employer is EPFL, I would not give up hope on getting a B permit.

Thanks kay, your information is very important. My employer is a start-up located in EPFL and EPFL is also involved within this project. I hope I will have good luck and thank you again.

You are right, I'm reconsidering the risk and definitely hold on my current position untill the work permit is accepted.

Thank you melusine, I will try B permit first and then L if unfortunately refused.

If you don't get a B but are approved for a working position, you will automatically get an L.
