enter Switzerland with schengen visa from Zurich airport

Hello Folks !

I am from the non-EU country and I need a visa to enter EU states and Switzerland as well. I have a student visa to study in Germany. I am planning to fly from my country directly to Zurich, visit my friends and then take a train towards my destination in Germany.

Please, could you advice whether I can leave the Zurich airport with the German student visa?

as far as I understand Switzerland belongs to Schengen area therefore there should be no problem leaving the airport. However I want to be 100% sure.

Thanks :-)

If you get the Schengen Visa from the Swiss consulate in your country, I think you will be OK.

You must get the Visa stamped at the country you arrive in, that is Switzerland.

thanks for your reply.
I have a visa issued by a German consulate from home country not by the Swiss one. I guess my entry country has to be Germany.

Exactly. Get it stamped at passport control, on arrival.

No, that doesn't sound right. I think you can enter the Schengen anywhere and that visa can be stamped anywhere. My Swiss visa was stamped in Iceland. Someone else should confirm though

Once you have a Schengen visa you can enter any country in the zone, so you'll be fine. What you're meant to do is apply for the visa from the country where you'll be spending the most time. Not sure how they police that, but that's the only rule.

Yes but the first entry country has to be the one which issued a visa. This was my question.

Re: enter Switzerland with schengen visa from Zurich airport

I think it will be OK if you arrive in Zürich first.
When i moved to CH, i came here via Frankfurt. The Passport stamp was processed in FRA, the Visa was a type D Visa issued by CH Embassy.
I could have theoretically stayed few days in DE then fly onward to CH though...

Info from this Website:

In cases where the applicant will be traveling to one and only one Schengen country, the applicant has to apply at the appropriate embassy/consulate of the certain country.

Whereas if the applicant is planning to visit two or more Schengen countries, it is highly recommended to be applying for the visa in the embassy/consulate of the country you will be residing in for most of the traveling days, referred to as the main destination.

In case there is no main destination but just a random visit to several Schengen countries, the applicant has to apply for the visa in the embassy/consulate on the first Schengen country he/she will enter according to the itinerary.

So i think, your case would be the middle one. You get Visa from DE, in which you'll reside, but to enter the schengen territory, its a free choice

And I answered it, or at least I thought I did. No.

Re: enter Switzerland with schengen visa from Zurich airport

I just contacted the Zurich airport and this is what I got:

if your Schengen Visa is valid for Switzerland too, or for all Schengen States, it’s possible to enter via Zurich, Switzerland to go to your final destination, Germany.
Please check this on your visa, it’s mentioned on the first line in the visa under “valid for”.

ZURICH STATE POLICE
Airport Division / Special Branch
Duty Officer Immigration and Enforcement Service
