Thalwil - Renewing Driver's License?

Hi Guys,

Unfortunately, I realize it has been 2 years (rather than the 1 year allowed) that I have been in Switzerland without switching over my US driver's license.

Does anyone have experience specifically dealing with the Thalwil Gemeide with this issue? I am just nervous that I will go into the Gemeide tomorrow and they will tell me no license is possible as it is past the first year and I will have to re-do everything. Is there any paperwork that I could bring with me to help do you think (besides the required documents)?

Thanks so much for your help!

Re: Thalwil - Renewing Driver's License?

Also, on another note is a standard US "C" license suitable here to drive a yellow plate 50 ccm Vespa?

Why would you go to the gemeinde? It's the German equivalent of OCN (Office de la circulation et de la navigation) who deal with things like drivers' licences, car plates, etc.

Re: Thalwil - Renewing Driver's License?

It's a common misconception that you have to exchange your U.S. license within one year.

You can drive using that license for one year, but after that it is not valid to drive here. You can convert for up to 5 years.

My memory is a tad rusty but you'll need the eye exam and you'll give over your U.S. license temporarily. It will be returned with either a sticker or stamp saying it's not valid here. I think my license took a few weeks and it was around 100 Francs. The eye exam shouldn't be more than 25-ish.

Re: Thalwil - Renewing Driver's License?

Can't say much about the canton of Zurich, but when I did it in Geneva, I was able to exchange my US licence despite having been in Switzerland for over a year. There was, however, a specific document needed to be completed for this - and it included a space for an eye doctor to confirm your eyesight abilities. The eye appointment cost 20 CHF and took maybe 10 minutes. It cost me 150 CHF to get the licence, and they did not ask me any questions about automatic vs manual driving abilities.

Exactly, (with the printed forms) do the eye exam in Thalwil or at Sihlcity, then go to Strassenverkehrsamt.
