B-Permit extension

My friend has been working on B permit since 7 years in Switzerland. His contract expires in April 2016 . Problem is the B permit is also getting expired in July 2016. Is it possible to get the B-permit extended while he looks for another contract after April 2016? He will be registered for unemployment after his contract expires in April 2016.
