Bern conton- Permit - Work situation

Hi there,

Last week I received a job offer from a company based in Zurich. This morning I went to the local council (in a French speaking village where I live), to register & apply for my work permit.

It was a bit difficult to communicate with them as they speak limited English (and I don't speak French or German ). Some how I managed to explain them my job situation etc. They took copies of my passport/job offer etc (they didn't require rental agreement and photo). I was told that they will be preparing my paper work and they would need my signature on the form. I was asked to return to their office tomorrow to sign the necessary forms).

Ok.. So when I asked the lady about the approximate time to get the work permit, she told me it will take around one month ! She saw my job start date (which is first week of November) and told me that I can start to work in the first week of November without actually waiting for the Workpermit to arrive ! I'm a bit confused cause as per my understanding, I am allowed to wok only after receiving the work permit. Am I right? Btw I'm an EU national (British).

Cheers,
Gem

You can definitely start work before the work permit arrives! You have applied for one, so you have done your bit for now!

So long as you've registered before you start work you're fine. You have an employment contract so you're good to go.
