Heads up for Americans--No More Passport Page Inserts After January

I was alerted on Facebook by another ex-pat that, after January 2016, the new US passports will not allow for additional page inserts. In other words, when you renew your passport the next time, you, as an American living abroad, will automatically receive the thicker, 52-page passport. But, if you fill up those pages before it expires, you cannot request additional pages.

The article doesn't address what we are supposed to do if we fill up the 52 pages before the passport expires in 10 years. Do we request a whole, new passport, or what? I have two sets of inserts in my passport right now and my husband has four.

Nooooooo!

(The 52 pager won't fit in my wallet. )

I travel frequently, but only back to the US, so my passport is still mostly blank. I'd never come close to filling the 52 pager.

Re: Heads up for Americans--No More Passport Page Inserts After January

We travel to many places that require visas, which take up an entire page, and so our passports are crazy thick. I am thinking that we are either going to have to renew our passports before their expiration date or else have multiple passports. I've sent a message to the embassy in Bern to explain this to me, but, shocker, they have left for the day. I will pass on whatever they tell me.

The passport application form (DS-11) has for the past few years now included a box at the top where you can indicate whether your want a 28-page or a 52-page passport book, so hopefully it will still be the case you can state your preference.

As for what happens once your passport fills up and page inserts are no longer possible, I don't know the official answer, but I'd be willing to bet that one would be expected to apply for (and pay for) an entirely new passport. That wouldn't be entirely fair to people who travel a lot, but since they started charging to insert pages a few years ago -- almost as much as the cost of a new passport -- I guess they figure that the added cost burden of the new policy isn't all that great.

US Passports - no added pages as of 2016

Currently US passport holders can have extra pages (in groups of 24) added to the passport (useful when travelling to countries with visas that take up the full page).

As of 1.01.2016 you can not longer do so (even if the passport is still date valid). You will need to purchase a full new passport.

Keep in mind that you can order a 52 page passport rather than the standard 28 page one at no extra cost but it must be specified when you apply for the passport.

Re: US Passports - no added pages as of 2016

Interesting. When I renewed a few years ago, I was told this policy was already in effect. They made it clear that when I run out of pages I need a new passport. I guess the implementation was planned back then but just got delayed.

My search, which I did, didn't show anything on the subject. It seems the previous poster did not include any tags and frankly I am not going to do an advanced search for everything I post. In addition to the fact that I am not even touched by the issue. Posting was just my good deed for the day.

So all that to say that sorry if it is old news to you. Hopefully you did not waste too much time responding.

Cambodia is a full page, too. I also have a bunch from Ireland that take up a half page. Why is your stamp so big, Ireland?

Last I checked, Americans don't need a visa to visit their own country. Then again the way the govt. treats those of us abroad, it wouldn't surprise me to see a visa requirement at some point.
