Help sought on Schengen Visa - Aufenthaltstitel Card

Dear Forum members,
I am a international student studying at St Gallen on a 3 month exchange program from a UK university.(I am a foreign national and not a UK citizen).
My UK visa is valid till end of January 2016, and thus my Schengen Visa issued by French embassy is valid until 90 days before expiry of UK Visa (2nd November).
As suggested, I enrolled myself for a residency permit in Switzerland whose validity is till end of February 2016.

I will be going back to UK for some work in beginning of December 2015, and will be returning to Italy for a weeks vacation just after that. Is this possible with an expired Schengen visa and a valid Aufenthaltstitel card?
What benefit does holding an Aufenthaltstitel card provide?

Re: Help sought on Schengen Visa - Aufenthaltstitel Card

Swiss Authorities Online (ch.ch) says this:
"The Schengen Agreement has an impact on the movement of persons. Holders of the following Swiss residence permits may travel within the Schengen Area* without a visa for stays of up to 90 days:
  • B permit (residence permit)
  • C permit (settlement permit)
  • L permit (short-term stay permit)
  • Ci permit (residence and work permit)
  • Diplomatic ID cards issued by the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA)
You must bring your Swiss permit and a valid travel document with you when travelling."

Note that the UK is not in Schengen but it appears that you have a separate UK visum.

Re: Help sought on Schengen Visa - Aufenthaltstitel Card

So long as you have your passport and Swiss residency permit with you, you're fine to travel in the Schengen Area. The permit replaces the visa which is only for your initial entry into the Area anyway. Just make sure you're either back in the UK before that visa runs out or get it renewed if you need it to continue your education in the UK.
