Einbürgerung [naturalization] in Basel-Stadt

Has anyone gone through the normal naturalization process in Basel-Stadt (i.e. not facilitated naturalization through marriage)? I'm in my eleventh year now and am gathering all the information I can about the process, but I'd like to talk with an actual human who has gone through it all. I think I've got the basic info; it's just a question of the human assessment. I'd also be interested in hearing about how long it took your papers to be processed.

Perhaps we could meet for a coffee?

Me: non-EU, freelancer, studied here, my high German's fine and I understand Dialäkt well enough (though I don't really speak it).

Looking forward to your stories.

I've heard the BS is more challenging than most, but otherwise it is straightforward.

If you are from the US, however, I suggest you consider speaking with a tax adviser and carefully read the US rules for dual citizenship, depending upon your future plans.

Re: Einbürgerung [naturalization] in Basel-Stadt

My wife started the process about 6 months ago so I have only limited information. We have been married for less than three years so she is doing regular naturalization.

Unfortunately, it seems that Basel-Stadt is about the worst place in Switzerland to apply for naturalization. They are very slow and the only information that you can get out of them is that it will take up to 3 years. Originally, they told us 2-2.5 years but the estimate seems to have gone up. My wife submitted her application and we got a bill almost immediately. We paid right away and waited. Since we hadn't heard anything my wife called them for the first time about a week ago. The lady couldn't give any details about the status of her application. She told my wife that she should just wait. End of conversation.

As a native Swiss I think the process in BS is a disgrace. BS has very high taxes but they provide a very low level of service. This is especially true when you consider that places like ZH manage to do the same thing in about 1 year.

Re: Einbürgerung [naturalization] in Basel-Stadt

Thanks for your experience. That's what I've heard from others as well. I was at the Einbürgerungssprechstunde in advance of my application (my 12 years are up in less than a year). They sent me away with basically no information, telling me that they would give me the list of documents to prepare when I had completed the residency requirement. I've heard what I need to do from others going through the process, not from them.

Has your wife had the interview yet?

Re: Einbürgerung [naturalization] in Basel-Stadt

She hasn't had an interview. We have not heard a thing except for receiving the initial bill about 6 months ago.

My wife also tried to get the application early so we could get everything ready for a submission as soon as she was eligible. But they don't want to deal with you or even give you an application before the 12 years are complete.

It is very obvious that naturalization is a very low priority for Basel-Stadt.
