Triple citizenship Swiss?

Hi all

I just had a visit from the Stadtpolizei to interview me for my citizenship application which was all fine...and at the end he dropped the fact that since I already have two passports (NZ and Bulgarian, both of which allow more than two passports) I will now have to give up one! According to him Switzerland only allows double citizenship. Not that I want to question the mighty authorities, but this is news to me and I've seen some previous posts here from 2009 where someone said their wife has Swiss, Australian and Croatian passports.

Could someone please confirm this for me - is it possible to have a tripple citizenship or do i really need to give up one passport - the police dude wasn't so impressed with my disappointment...maybe i don't get accepted anyway for lack of enthusiasm !

Many thanks
Assia

Re: Tripple citizenship Swiss?

According to this document (section 5.1.1) dual citizens and those with multiple citizenships are to be treated as the same. In all cases, Switzerland does not require previous citizenship to be renounced (5.1.2)

Re: Tripple citizenship Swiss?

perhaps that applies to those wanting to become Swiss- and already have 2 other nationalities. And perhaps not for Swiss who go on to acquire 2 more nationalities later?

Yes it is possible, and I don't think it needs to be discussed with the Stadtpolizei. Why would you be going to the Stadtpolizei for a citizenship discussion? I thought that is a conversation with your Gemeinde or Bern.

So was the conversation just in passing, or did he provide instructions?

Re: Triple citizenship Swiss?

thanks nqnln for the document.
It does seem like it should be possible but it's not explicitly indicated I feel. What it says in 5.1.2 "die bisherige Staatsangehörigkeit" could be referring to only a singular (or also multiple) citizenship.
I'm just amazed that either the stadtpolizei didn't know or he is using it a bit as a provocation!
I was also wondering if it matters in what order you get citizenships - say i'd have swiss and bulgarian first and then go on to get nz...would that be less of a problem to keep the three? Sounds a bit silly though...
The stadtpolizei make the report and send it to the authorities then for a decision...not sure if my surprise made such a good impression but i'm pissed if he was (which probably is the case) wrong...

You are not visiting Stadtpolizei by your own will, but you are being invited for a "conversation". It is the process, official. One of the final steps of ongoing citizenship process

The official in question misunderstood the law. You won't be required to forgo any of your other nationalities.
