German visa required or not for interns in Germany

Dear everyone,

First of all, thank you for reading this post and try to answer my question.

I am a non-EU engineering student in EPFL and will do my internship/thesis in Germany next Feb for 6 months (until Aug 2016). Right now I have:

- Swiss Permit B valid until November 2016

I know that I will need a German work permit but my question is will I also need a German EU visa as well or my Swiss permit is already enough?

Thank you once again for all your help. Have a nice day.

You will need a valid Germany-specific visa which will be issued by the German embassy in Berne.

You may also need to ask for your Swiss permit to be put on hold if you don't plan to be back in Switzerland during that 6 month period. If you're returning regularly then it shouldn't be a problem, but B/C permit holders can only be out of Switzerland for a maximum of 6 months before the permit becomes invalid unless itis been held. Check with your commune admin office - further education is an acceptable reason for holding a permit.
