L permit expiry date and leaving?

Hi all,

I am a third country national, and my 2 year L-permit will expire in September, '07 (along with my work contract). Does anyone know if a L-permit holder (non- EU) can stay on for 2-3 extra months, before leaving Switzerland? Or do they have to leave immediately the day the L-permit expires? I know that L-permit holders dont get unemployment benefit, but I would like to stay on for 2-3 months more without pay. Is this possible?

Hi I have some friends under similar situation. From what i heard you should have no problem if you stay less than 3 extra months. But before you leave you should cancel your registration in local administration. Will try to search for more precise infos.

Re: L permit expiry date and leaving?

You can't is the simple answer. As your permit is tied to your job if that goes so does your right to be here. The permit becomes invalid once the reason for issuing it to you disappears.

If you come from a country that doesn't need a tourist visa to visit Switzerland then, sufficient funds permitting, you could possibly stay for up to 3 more months. If you require a tourist visa to visit then you should plan to leave as soon as possible.
