Swiss citizenship

My friend who has lived in Zurich for 30 years has decided to apply for Swiss citizenship. He moved here when he was 9. He will be collecting his application forms in the next few days.

He has no criminal record, always employed never been on social and speaks German like local. How long will he have to wait to get his citizenship? I gather it has become harder recently or that some new laws are coming in? Is there going to be some sort of written and oral exam?

I am also aiming to apply for it in the coming years once I improve my German. How to prepare best for this exam? Any pointers would be appreciated.

Re: Swiss citizenship

It differs per Kanton I think. A friend of mine applied and had it all done in 9 months in Olten.

It's not just a question of these, it's also how well integrated into Swiss life he is, especially at gemeinde level. Even if you've been here for decades there's no guarantee you'll get citizenship.
