Urgent questions on the Visa de Retour

Hi,
I will update my permit recently (maybe tomorrow or the day after). However I will go to Greece on Apr 2 and definitely the permit will not be printed by that time. I would go to apply for the visa de retour so that I can travel within the Schengen region. It says the visa de retour will be given immediately, but I am worrying the delay of the materials sent from the local population office to the canton population office. If my materials are not sent in time and I go to the canton population office, I can't get the visa, right?

Cheers,
Mike.

Re: Urgent questions on the Visa de Retour

Sorry, but why did you leave it so late to renew your permit? It should be done 2-3 weeks ahead of its expiry date.

Anyway, it shouldn't be a problem as the visa is issued immediately. It doesn't have to go from the local to the cantonal office, it's just issued when you ask for it when you go to renew your permit.

Re: Urgent questions on the Visa de Retour

Hi, thank you for your reply!

It was just an accident that I received the previous permit several days before it expires, then I have to extend it immediately!

What I am worrying is that after the day I submit the renewal materials to the local population office, the local office needs several days to submit them to the canton office( the local office told me so), before this, my information (applying for the renewal) won't be updated in the data base of the canton office, which is the only place I can apply for visa de retour. So I cannot apply for a visa de retour during this period, but my trip is very urgent.

If I have the receipt that I applied for the renewal, can I use it to apply for the visa de retour?

Thanks!

Re: Urgent questions on the Visa de Retour

What nationality are you and what permit do you have? Permits are usually issued on a yearly basis so how could it take so long for your previous permit to arrive?

In Zurich, you go to the cantonal migration authority, explain the situation, they check the database and as long as your case is pending and there are no obvious issues with your permit, they stick you a visa in our passport right there and you pay the fee. Well the other way around. Been there. Just don't put it off until the last minute.

Thank you !
So that means it needs some time to upload to the data base. And even need to be after some check, until the status is pending?

No, they do everything right there and then. Again I am talking about my experience in Zurich.

I just checked my old passport and the visa was a D multiple entry visa (I was traveling to the US). I think these days you can travel within Schengen with a D visa, but I would sure doublecheck, especially taking into account the current security situation in Europe.

Re: Urgent questions on the Visa de Retour

Hi,
Now the issue is that I just received the my old permit card by the registered letter this morning (expire on 31/03) and I will go to the population office (local) to extend it this afternoon. I need to travel on 02/04 to Greece. So I need to go to the canton office to apply the visa de retour before my departure.

I am worrying that the local office will take some days to send my materials to the canton office, and before that (the canton office registers the data base) I cannot apply for the return visa anyway.

Especially the there is the Easter.

Re: Urgent questions on the Visa de Retour

Thank you every one. I solved the problem. The canton office issued the return visa the same day when I applied for the renewal. There is no any delay.
