Cities in Swiss where more IT jobs are available

Hi All,

I am Selvam and am an Computer Engineer having 10 years of experience in IT. Currently living in Freiburg, Germany (Close to Basel). I am going to get my German Passport soon which allows me to work in Switzerland. Currently am looking for jobs in Swiss in IT as Test Manager, QA Manager, Scrum Master, Project Manager. Can you please let me know which cities in Swiss are better for IT jobs. If its close to Freiburg (Say Basel, Zurich) i can still stay in freiburg and travel to work. If IT jobs are in another location i need to completely relocate and also i need to plan for my child education.

Please provide your inputs.

The country is called Switzerland, Swiss is an airline or the citizens of Switzerland. As an IT expert I would of thought you know how to use spellcheck as well.

Re: Cities in Swiss where more IT jobs are available

Why don't you wait and see where you get a job offer? It may well be a case of going where you can rather than picking where you go. You don't have a passport yet, and I doubt many places would be willing to hire you before you do. Also, IT jobs are in high competition at the moment if the threads on here are anything to go by.

Re: Cities in Swiss where more IT jobs are available

You have an idea how long you will be travelling daily if you find a job in Zurich? It´s approx 2 hours one way! And that is from the station to the station, not counting in any further way to get (from) there.

Basel is more doable

Basel perhaps - but Zurich? You're talking a good 2 hours each way every day - by car or train.

I take it you're not overly keen on spending time with your child

What more do you want to know? You pretty much wrote the same post twice. You asked which Swiss cities have IT jobs, and got an answer.

Re: Cities in Swiss where more IT jobs are available

Hi All,

Thanks for your reply.

I am thinking if i can move to Weil am Rhein which is the border of Germany and stay still in Germany but its little bit nearer to Basel and Zurich compared to Freiburg.

In a year time am also planning to buy an flat in Weil am Rhein so that my family can reside in Germany and i can travel to work for Zurich or Basel even if it meant for 1 hour from Weil am Rhein.

So i will be focussed on Zurich and Basel for my job search as other cities are not as good as Zurich for IT jobs.

Re: Cities in Swiss where more IT jobs are available

It's not just one hour from Weil am Rhein to Zurich. By public transport, it's still more like 1.5-2 hours from main station to main station, not including time you need to travel within Weil am Rhein and especially within Zurich. Forget driving, unless you find work at the Western part/suburb of Zurich, you would have to drive through Zurich and that is a nightmare, always, every day.

Also expect to look for a job at least 6 months if not longer. Switzerland doesn't have a fast, dynamic job market.

Why don't you start applying to whatever you find that interests you and then take it from there.

Re: Cities in Swiss where more IT jobs are available

Yes, Weil is a good place from which you can commute to Switzerland. Though it's nowhere near as nice a place to live as Freiburg. Taxes are much lower in Switzerland too which is something else for you to consider. Anyhow it's all conjecture at the moment, I wouldn't up-sticks and move my family without having a firm job offer first.

Re: Cities in Swiss where more IT jobs are available

Ok i will start applying.

I have finished my B2 in german but am not as good in German language as am in English Language.

Earlier when i tried for few jobs in Germany, i got rejected because of my German language skill.

Whether the German language will again be a problem in Switzerland also

Please share your input.

Your biggest problem right now isn't language. It's the fact you're a non-EU citizen and any Swiss employer would have to jump through a lot of hoops to hire you. Not impossible, but in this competitive market some just won't bother. Nothing wrong with applying, but be realistic about your chances until you've got the German passport.

Do a search, there's plenty of information on here about language requirements for IT jobs. In short, all companies are different. Your best bet is to simply send some applications out and see how far you get. But you're probably best off waiting until you get a German passport first.

If you're settled in Freiburg though, I would also have another think as to why you even want to come and work here. It's a great place to live and raise a family.

Re: Cities in Swiss where more IT jobs are available

Seriously, don't do any planning until you land a job.

In recent years, many of the larger companies here are cutting IT jobs or moving them to lower cost locations outside Switzerland, and that trend looks to continue. There are still jobs for highly skilled people with experience, but the competition is fierce.

What exactly have you been doing in the last two roles? Project management? Database management? The things you have listed don't really say much about what you actually do.
