C permit renewal - travelling

Hi all,

C-permit expires on 27th April. We have travel abroad planned over those few days.

As I understand this website from Zurich Work Permits department the district office will send us an invitation to turn up and apply for the renewal.

As I understand the reponses to this post it is advisable to request some kind of tide-you-over document if you plan to be travelling while the renewal process is ongoing.

Mrs NickatBasel plans to phone the district office (Kreisburo) tomorrow to check - but it would be useful to know from Zurich residents:
- Has anyone requested this tide-you-over document recently - and is it really necessary?
- Has anyone been out of the country while the renewal process was ongoing - was there anything else in particular you had to do?

I will of course post the results of MrsNick's phone call tomorrow.

We've been through the renewal process about 3 times now and I forget the details each time.

Cheers,
Nick

If you apply now for a new one you may get lucky and have it before you have to travel? Mine came within a week.

The Kreisbüro or Rathaus has the documents to complete

Apply before you go, assuming you have an EU passport it's just a matter of rubber stamping as you can come & go as you please. I have often travelled for work & pleasure whilst applying for a new permit. As B permit's were for 1 year & C's for 3 years long ago I must have reapplied at least 8 times without issue.

Thanks for replies so far. I'm guessing we'll be lucky and we will have our new permits before we go. We are all EU so presumably no issue anyway.

Re: C permit renewal - travelling

I got a form about 3 months before my 5-year B permit was due to expire asking me to apply for a new permit. I completed it and posted it. I then went on holiday for 5 weeks with my B permit expiring about half way through the trip.

I never take my permit with me when I travel (unless I want to claim VAT back from somewhere in Europe) so it makes no difference whether it's valid or not. I returned using my British passport as usual, and the C permit was waiting for me in my postbox.

Re: C permit renewal - travelling

I was once asked to show my C-permit at check-in when flying from Manchester to Basel - on the Manchester side. This was after the Bilateral Agreement came into effect. Luckily I carry it. Not sure how easily I could have argued the toss with a jobsworth who has the power to stop me boarding.

Cheers,
Nick

Ah.. friends at work had this.. after some complaints the answer received was there was a small group of check in girls who were thinking above their station and they won't be doing it again.
The shift leader was on a power trip and banging on about first line of protection without actually having a clue.

A friend refused to show his permit and demanded to speak to the station manager and was swiftly handed his boarding pass.

Never carried a permit, if you have am EU passport you don't need anything else to fly to CH, perhaps you told him you were living in CH?

I've never been asked to show my permit either and I've flown numerous times between Manchester and either Basel or Geneva. Lucky really as I don't carry it with me as it is not valid for anything outside Switzerland anyway and as an EU national it's not needed for entry into Switzerland.

I find it quite surprising that the people in Manchester would even know what a Swiss permit was.

Re: C permit renewal - travelling

Thanks for all the replies.

MrsNick phoned the district office (Kreisburo) today.

The paperwork for the new permits will be sent this week.

We should have the new ones a few days after the application goes in.

Cheers,
Nick
