PhD completion / Job Search Visa / Non EU

Dear EF Members,

There are lots of good information on this topic already in EF but I couldn't find a good match for my situation, so putting forward this thread.

I am a non EU B Permit holder since Oct 2012. My employment contract and PhD ends on May 31st 2016 and I have got a B-Permit that will also expire on 31st May. I do not yet have a job to continue after 31st of May. So I am planning to apply for a job search visa and also register with the RAV department for unemployment benefits.

My problem is, my PhD defense is on 25th May 2016. I can get a provisional PhD Diploma only on 26th May, which will be less than a week before my permit expires. So what is the best way to go to avoid last minutes panic and confusion.

I have read in the forum mixed opinions about going to RAV and register there and based on that get a permit extension OR is it possible to convince the canton (BaselStadt) to give a 6 month job search permit without a provisional PhD degree.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks in a advance.

Best,

Kushal

Re: PhD completion / Job Search Visa / Non EU

These two threads may help to better understand the process to obtain a non-EU job search L permit after completing your PhD:

New employment rules for non- EU swiss University graduates

Any experience with graduate employment for Non EU students from Swiss universities?

Also, read the attachment to smashe's post dated 02.05.2011, 15:02 in the first thread regarding the confirmation from the university that the diploma has not yet been issued.
