EU L Permit questions

Hi everyone,

I'm really sorry if the answers to these questions can be found somewhere on here, I have searched and haven't found them though.

I moved to Switzerland from England in August 2015 and have an L Permit to work as an Au Pair that expires in August 2016.
However I want to stay and work as a Nanny for at least another year, meaning I would be changing jobs.

1) My friend did a similar thing to me last year and tells me that to stay, I will have to prove that I earn 2,500 francs a month. Does anyone have any more information about this? I can't find anything on the internet. (Canton Bern)

2) If I have contracts and all the information, could I apply for a permit in July? Or do I have to wait for my old one to expire?

3) Do I have to have somewhere to live before applying for a permit? My concern is that I will find somewhere to rent and then not get a permit (massive concern anyway) so it would make more sense to get the permit first?

Thank you for reading

Re: EU L Permit questions

Firstly, do your host family want to extend the au pair situation? That would be possible for another year as you're an EU national.

How old are you? Nannies must be a minimum of 22 years of age.

Salary must also be a minimum of CHF3,500 a month.

There's more here on the requirements for domestic helpers/nannies.

http://www.perfectway.ch/en/for-fami...formation.html

You will not be able to get a permit until you have rented somewhere to live, they'll want to see the rental contract as part of the permit application.

You'll also need to provide an employment contract. If it's a single employer then they'll need to take care of your accident insurance and AHV/IV/EO/ALV BVG/tax. If several employers then you'll need to organise all these yourself. Don't forget that you'll need to arrange health and possibly the accident insurance for yourself as you'll no longer be covered once you stop being an au pair.

You can apply for the permit whenever you want to, providing you have the relevant paperwork and can support yourself financially until you start earning a wage.

Re: EU L Permit questions

Thanks for your response

I will be 25 in summer. And I don't want to extend the Au Pair contract as I would like to live out and that's not a possibility in this job.

Also with the jobs I have found, I would be working part time (15 hours a week) with two families, so total of 30 hours, so I would not earn the 3,500.

And thank you for the tax information, that's a whole load of other stuff I don't understand and need to research.

Re: EU L Permit questions

Well, more info here on some of the insurances.

https://www.ch.ch/en/invalidity-insurance

https://www.ch.ch/en/ahv/

https://www.ch.ch/en/self-employment/

I suggest you go to the Bern cantonal migration office and talk with them about your plans. They'll tell you whether what you plan to earn will be enough or not. If they say yes, then work on sorting the other things out because if it's not enough the rest is moot. As you'll be self-employed they may want to see a business plan and statements proving you have enough financial resources to support yourself while you get going.
