C-Permit after 5 years as PhD student?

Hello everyone,

After almost 5 years of residence in Switzerland my EU B-Permit is about to expire. During these years I’ve been employed without interruption as a PhD student. Will I automatically get a C-Permit when my current one expires? Reading the regulations (under ‘Erteilung der Niederlassungsbewilligung’ here: (http://www.ma.zh.ch/internet/sicherh...ufenthalt.html), my case doesn’t fall under the ordinary case, since as a PhD Student from the EU I will have the years of my PhD recognized only if after the studies I switch to a permanent job. However, I understand that I could apply for a C-Permit “aufgrund erfolgreicher Integration”, because I satisfy the language (and additional) requirements listed.

Does anyone know if I’m interpreting this correctly / have any experience on this matter?

Thanks a lot!

You don't need to meet the language requirement, Italians are exempt from this.

I would guess the job situation may be the most important, but ask the Zurich migration office if you can get a C via integration.

Thanks for your reply!

Isn't the official language of the canton the one that is considered for this procedure? Anyway, I'll ask for an official explanation at the migration office and share the reply here.

Cheers

Re: C-Permit after 5 years as PhD student?

As said Italians are exempt as are several other nationalities.

EU nationalities language exemption: Belgium, Germany, Denmark, France, Liechtenstein, Greece, Italy, Netherlands, Austria, Portugal and Spain.

So you don't need to prove any language proficiency, only meet whatever the other requirements for integration are.
