EU Citizen studying in Geneva while living in France

Hello,

I am starting a master's program at the University of Geneva next month, and I am considering living in Annemasse, France. I have dual US and Bulgarian/EU nationality.

Does anyone know what type of permit I would need in this situation? I understand that normally you need student permit for foreigners without paid activity. Also, under a student permit you are allowed to work 15 hours a week in Switzerland (source in French below), but would I have the option to work in Geneva if I live in France?

I would really appreciate it if anyone knows how this is done. Thanks.

Re: EU Citizen studying in Geneva while living in France

For a student permit here I think you have to live in Switzerland. You need to be a resident to attend uni, which you're not if you're living over the border. France would be unlikely to give you a permit either I guess as you're not studying in a uni there. But best to talk to the Geneva migration office to be sure.

Be warned about your US nationality. You'll find it difficult to get a bank account here because of it and no, don't just ignore it either. If the bank finds out you're American and you haven't told them you risk having your account closed immediately. Same would probably happen in France too.

Re: EU Citizen studying in Geneva while living in France

Seems to be OK for EU citizens to live in France and study in Geneva. But it's complicated, e.g. for health care. CMU system, is mentioned here:

Oops, I didn't answer the question. I recommend joining frontalier.org and getting advice from them. They are really the only people who know all the compplications of cross frontier life.
