Has anyone applied for British Citizenship - whilst living in Switzerland

Title says it all!

Has anyone managed to ahem, "bend" the rules and apply for British Citizenship whilst simultaneously living in Switzerland?

Background
  • I hold "Republic of Mancunia" Passport
  • My children are born in CH but hold British Passports
  • Wife is non-EU but with British Permanent Right of Abode status.
  • Wife gets funny questions at UK Immigration now as technically she has to apply for a Visa to enter the UK as she must be resident in the UK to have a Permanent Right of Abode status. If that makes sense!
  • Whilst UK Immigration are questioning Mrs Oldmanc with 10 years marriage to UK citizen and 2 British children, right next to her they're letting in any --censored--. Careful now, I nearly intimated that people from certain parts of East Europe are less than fully trustworthy. Actually, there's many British who are less than fully trustworthy, as I'm sure you know...

this is an interesting one. How much do the British Consular services know about you? Where were you married?

In the strict letter of what is required, you need to be resident with your missus in the US of GB and NI for three years......but they know nothing about who lives where.

Try it with a relative's United States of Gordon Brown address?

Agree with Lob, very interesting.

The reasoning from the Homeland Security Office will be that if you ain't living there and paying tax you don't get the benefits accorded to people who are living there and paying tax - even new arrivals from the more colourful USE countries.

It might be worth investing in a bit of lawyer advice?

Good idea - I will check with an Immigration Lawyer next time we're back in the UK.

As a thread-drifting aside, re

"Try it with a relative's United States of Gordon Brown address?"

I regularly checked into Hotels around the world and put my address as

"Windsor House,
Buckingham Palace
London"

or "10 Downing Street, Westminster, London".

Childish of course, but it made me laugh.
I even did that on immigration forms - Thailand and Korea (South not North ) spring to mind.

Probably best not to try that entering the USA
