I went through the threads but I was unable to find the answer to my question...

My 1 year L permit will expire in July 2008. My employer would like to offer me a contract of "unlimited time period.."

Is it better to renew the L permit for up to 18 months, and then apply for the B permit. Or will it be better to immediately apply for the B permit? Will there be problems to exhaust the L permit, and then apply for the B?

Do nothing. Your employer should handle this for you.

I am an Au Pair, and I have an L permit for one year. but I want to stay here longer, therefore, I am looking for other types of jobs here in Switzerland, does anyone know if, since I have this permit (L), am I able to work another job with this permit or/and if possible to change to a better permit? I have an american nationality.....

Your prospective employer would have to apply for a permit for you. Unless you are highly skilled, this will be difficult.
