| mistake in tax filing--fixable?
I'm in a pickle and wonder if anyone can help. The accountant who filed my 2006 tax forms (I filed very late, but that is a different story) never went over his work with me before filing. I only found out after my new accountant went to file my 2007 taxes a couple of months later that a huge mistake had been made. $200,000 that got moved from one account to another got listed twice as assets. Therefore, Switzerland charged me taxes on it twice.
I filed an amendment with the authorities but there seems to be a rule that if the mistake is not caught within 30 days, there is nothing more to be done about it. This seems crazy to me. It was clearly a bookkeeping mistake. I don't own the extra $200,000, so why should I have to pay tax on it? Can anyone advise?
The next step would be for me to file an appeal, which would cost me money. My old accountant is advising against it. The tax difference seems to be about CHF1500.
