You might have missed that the laws have been continously restricted over the past years to put the kibosh on the practice of "paper marriages".

Your "wife" would not be granted a permament visa unless both of you don't live togheter in matrimonial cohabitation ("eheliche Gemeinschaft" how to better say that in english?), that means, both of you live in the same flat IN Switzerland.

Otherwise, there is no legal cause for the authority to issue your wife a B-permit. And apart from a B-permit I can't imagine what you mean by a permament visa.

You missed the point: our your stud from Lugano is so bowled over by California where he is just now that he wants to stay there. The best way of achieving this, he thinks, is to marry an American. Quite why he is posting to a forum in Switzerland is a confusion to all...

He means a C, but that takes years of cohabitation and residency in Switzerland. Also, the Americans don't just hand out Green Cards to individuals that are only married for this purpose.

Why don't you apply to a community college or something?! You can get a student visa that way, but you do need to prove you're interested in completing the program. You're basically guaranteed entry -- CC's accept everyone. If you want a challenge, why not apply to a UC like UCLA, UC Berkley, UC Santa Barbara or somewhere along those lines? One of my friends is currently getting an MA at Santa Barbara, and the school is *full* of non-residents. He has three roommates -- one is German and two are Chinese.

p.s. My Swiss wife was able to get residency in the US for a year by studying. We did not want to get married for another year and found this to be the best solution.
