Any advice on this would be greatly appreciated.

I'm a US permanent resident (currently working on my US citizenship) and I will be moving to Switzerland in April to be with my significant other. I will be returning to the US in June for about 3 weeks to wrap up unfinished work with my current employer.

I have two questions:

1) If I return to the US in June for 3 weeks, does my 90 day tourist visa start over again when I re-enter Switzerland? I wasn't sure if the 90 day tourist visa is a consecutive 90 day stay (a straight, uninterrupted 90 days) or if it's cumulative (meaning they add up all the days you are in Switzerland and as soon as you hit 90 days, your tourist visa expires regardless of any time in between that is spent outside of Switzerland).

2) If I get married, could I then stay in Switzerland permanently as the spouse of a swiss citizen? Would I have to return to the US when my tourist visa expires while my Swiss permanent residency through marriage is in process?

Others have said that you must leave the country for one month (4 weeks) between stays in order for the tourist visa to be renewed. However...

If you are married you can stay here while the B permit is processed. I did the same thing, although I was previously married in the US. I am curious, if you are in possession of a US Green Card, what is your current country of citizenship? This could impact things a little, although once your are married it is not as important. In addition, moving abroad during naturalization in the US might not be the most intelligent of things if it is your intention to receive American citizenship.

Firstly if it is your intention to marry a Swiss national then you can apply for a permit on this basis. This permit will be of restricted time, typically 4-6 months during which you must marry. Thereafter you will be presented with a B permit. If it is not your intention to marry during the 6 months following entry then you need to leave for 4 weeks between renewals of your tourist visa. You are also not able to stay for a period exceeding 9 months in any calendar year. Note that the authorities tend to turn a blind eye to your staying if they know that you are serious about getting married. They can see this as very typically you marry in the community where your "significant other" is living and if you have registered to marry in say 8 months they are extremely likely to be accomodating. Makes a change to state the Swiss authorities can be flexible I must say...

I am currently a citizen of the Phillipines but have been in the US for over 20 years. I guess I just procrastinated in getting my US Citizenship. The tourist visa is also 90 days for Philippine nationals. Where can I get information on extending my tourist visa with the intention of getting married? Would I also be required to still leave Switzerland for 1 month if I extend my tourist visa based on this?

What about a student visa? What are the requirements for a student visa? Can anyone send me to a website where I can get additional information on a student visa?

Have you looked at the Swiss Embassy in Washington's website? If not, why don't you have your significant other contact their canton of residency for more information -- this is often handled on the cantonal level and they can provide you both with more information. It is my own experience that is better to go through the spouse, as they are the Swiss citizen.
