I am a non-EU B permit holder. My B permit is being renew at the moment. I have the proof from the Canton that I am living in. Currently, I am on vacation in another country. Do I need a visa to enter Switzerland ???

Which non-EU nationality are you ?

If you are non-EU, you need a re-entry visa which you should have taken from the immigration dept (for 30chf) that allows you to re-enter swiss when your Permit is in process.

However, it depends on which NON-EU passport you are holding. US, Canada passport holders can enter for about 90 days i guess without any permit

Ask them (nicely) for a re-entry visa. The fee was 45 sFr., last time I checked.

If you ask for re-entry visa and you are going to a Schengen country, Migrationsamt now gives a Swiss Schengen VISA, which allows to enter the Schengen countries as well as return back to Switzerland. This costs 65CHF.

Since you are visiting UK, I don't know whether this information is useful for you. Perhaps only re-entry for Switzerland might cost 45CHF as Ashish just mentioned.

Also, Migrationsamt had pretty small queues last time I visited for my Schengen/ReEntry VISA for Switzerland (last month). So take half an hour and get it done. Remember to take a passport sized photo (recently taken) for the VISA.

I finally managed to get it done.. Stood twice in mile long queues though (Easter rush?). First time, they did not have my data (that my L was being renewed), but the next time, it was easy. Just a photo, and 93 SFr .

I have a similar situation, my B-permit is being renewed currently but we are going to South Africa before it ill be done. I have an SA passport.
I have heard that I need to get a schengen visa for re-entry - which makes sense. However paying 93chf (this figure I confirmed) seems steep, especially since I need it only since they are taking too long to process the B-permit renewal. I applied as soon as I got the notice.

My question - does anyone know if there is a way I can avoid the fee since my wife is an EU passport holder. Mostly non-EU spouses get schengen visas for free based on the EU passport of the spouse.

Hi all, I just found I am in this situation today I need guidance from EF...

I'm changing Kanton (ZH to SH) so I need to hand my B visa to them as to change it, which I will be doing 01/Dec.

But I am flying to South America on mid December, which doesnt look like my visa will be ready on time! (couldnt do it earlier as i needed my contract from landlord to prove i'm moving to SH).

Should I request already a temporary visa to the Migrationsamt re-enter Switzerland, when i come back in January?

note: my passport is EU-country.

I had this re-entry Swiss visa twice in the past, and both were free
That was in Kt.Aargau

Recently I had something similar, with my family - although moving within the same Canton.
We moved to a different Gemeinde at about the time our residence permits were being renewed, after we had received a letter saying our renewal had been approved but before the permits had been issued, and thought the proper paperwork had been handed in to everyone ... then found out a month later (about a month before we had to travel overseas) that there was one more piece of paper we had to hand in to our new Gemeinde for the process to be done. We submitted that paper.
We went on our holiday, without the new permits, but with a copy of the letter saying the new permits had been approved. On our return to Switzerland we showed our passports, the old permits, and the letter saying our new permits had been approved. The guy at the desk checked his computer for a few minutes, then we were through with no more questions.

Indeed I asked to have a proof of my permit being renewed - as the lady had to keep my original permit. I explained I was going overseas, and she kindly made a copy of my permit, stamped/signed and wrote something in German like "under renewal for new canton" - so I am assuming that will be okay!

Now I'm almost heading to the sun!
