Name Chaos with Indian Passport in Switzerland

Hi All,

I am having a really peculiar situation which is driving me nuts. I am having only first name(Siddhant) in my Indian Passport and as nothing works in Switzerland without last name, so migrationsamt people put my first name as the last name in my Permit(which is still in processing after 3 months).

So passport is having only first name(Siddhant) and B permit will have Siddhant Siddhant as my name.

At every other place, I am having my full name which is Siddhant Tomar(In my Company, Home contract). If I get a new passport here in Switzerland it will take minimum 2 months and then I need to apply for a new permit, which again might take a month and in between I need to travel to India.

I can get my Passport in India in 15 days time with full Siddhant Tomar name. So if I do that, I will have two different names on my permit and passport.

So will I have any problem in coming back here? Can anybody share his/her similar experiences.

Best Regards
Siddhant

Talk to someone in India embassy, they might suggest you the way out from your problem.

Re: Name Chaos with Indian Passport in Switzerland

welcome to idiosyncrasies of the suisse land..My friend, a Sikh, had a similar problem, his permit was in processing for ever. Luckily he could finally sort out his problem but he had to very proactive and personally call lot of people both in Bern and his home gemeinde to sort out the matter.
Regarding getting in back in switzerland with a slight mix up of name, I personally think as long as your visa satus is all valid and okay, it should not be problem.

Do you know what they say about New York, NY?
It's so good they had to name it twice.

I wonder how Madonna does it.

I thought even first and family name wouldn't be enough to differentiate 1.1 bil. Indians!?

Re: Name Chaos with Indian Passport in Switzerland

I had a chat with one more guy and he says that it might or might not be a problem, there is no written rule that you can do this. It all depends on the person at the counter which is a slightly stupid answer. But if you look at the situation then even if I dont get a new passport from India even then I have two different names as in old passport its(Siddhant) and in Permit it will be(Siddhant Siddhant)

Uh, that is so strange. I am from South India, where we always land up in a terrible mess because we rarely have a 'family name'. I know I am not being helpful, but I wonder how you have a passport with just the first name!? What does your school certificate say, for example? Passport authorities make such a hue and cry about all these things, and it is unfortunate you should land up here with a weird passport...

Good luck.. Maybe a new passport is a good idea..

Hi Siddhant,

I have the very same problem! In my Indian passport, my first name and family name are both under first name. So, with a little luck, the Swiss authorities did not make a big fuss about it (in Basel stadt, and in Basel Land), and put down the following in my B-permit: "First name Last name, First name Last name". Everything is fine till now, no problems. But, sometime down the line I would like to have the passport corrected, then the swiss permit, then my bank account....!

The other idiosyncracy is that I spoke with the Embassy in Bern - they can do the correction, but it effectively makes you passport-less for 2 months! Makes me wonder how they come up with these stupid procedures

Re: Name Chaos with Indian Passport in Switzerland

Just go to Indian Embassy in Bern, they will send your passport to India for correction and an observation will be there on second page of your passport with your last/family name.
