Are Non EU students allowed to Work?

Hello All,

I am in this section as my attempt to obtain a residence permit to set up a business failed!!!! Everything was set but the cantonal authorities felt it would be difficult having a Bahamas passport.

As a result I have enrolled as a full time student (MBA) at a university in Zurich. I just wanted to get some feedback on my decision as the Dean mentioned that I would be able to work. I tried to find information on Zurich canton's website but with no luck.

Do you know of the restrictions for Non -EU full time students to take up part time work? I mean like 15hours...and I am sure the school would write me a letter to state it is part of my course "work". A link would be helpful. Also, the plan is for a Student B -Non EU visa.

Cheers folks.

Hi, yes indeed you can work while a student to a maximum of 15 hours per week but you need to have the permit first. You are also allowed to work more during official semester holidays. This is probably the link you were looking for:

As long as the uni will have you of course. At the end of the day you pay to go here so as long as you are qualified you are welcome. Question is what part time course?!

Re: Are Non EU students allowed to Work?

Was this for a GmbH or AG an Einzelfirma ? I would have thought a GmbH or an AG would have been ok to get a residence permit/work permit.

Re: Are Non EU students allowed to Work?

That is what "we" thought. Well I was going through Zug and the formation company even set a meeting with them to go over things verbally. The Zug authorities came back to say that my chances did not look good because as 3rd country national it had to go to Bern on the federal level bladee bladee...and also my business was not specialist.

It was for a GmbH...and I was even considering an AG...I just thought sod it really. Couldn't be bothered to bring in money and other things and to risk getting rejected.

Re: Are Non EU students allowed to Work?

ya, so it seems that as a non EU national, the residence/work permit is not guaranteed even for a GmbH or an AG if the cantonal authorities deem otherwise.

Good thing you did though, in terms of finding out beforehand rather than doing all the paperwork + capital lock up and then finding out.
