Are there any strategies for an American citizen to be able
to get a work permit in Switzerland? I been trying for so many
years, but all the employers and agencies write back that it's
impossible without an EU passport. Is suicide the only choice, and to
hope to be reincarnated to a Swiss / EU family?
I just recently started my job search in Switzerland. I was told by several agencies that it is impossible for a non-EU citizen to get a work permit. One of the same agencies that told me it was impossible two weeks ago called and asked if I’m still available. It seems that what they meant to say was we didn’t realize your skills were in demand and now that we have a position that matches your skill set it is suddenly no longer impossible. From this I can assume it is difficult and not their first choice to hire a non-EU citizen, but if your skill set is in demand it can be accomplished.
Well my skill set is in demand (Informatik, strong Unix/Sun experience
with CISA and CISSP certs), but they all say that due to the difficulty
of the work permit application for a non-EU applicant it is not worth the bother.
The rule of hiring people from a non-eu country is simple: the employer has to prove that despite advertising for a certain position, there are no suitable candidate in switzerland or in the EU found, then in that case you could get a permit to work....
with IT there is a little bit of a problem because most big and I mean big companies are outsourcing this part to India....
EU and Swiss people can find IT jobs quite easily. Non-EU [without existing permit] will have more problems and have to be carrying unique skills which cannot be sourced from EU/Swiss markets.
Plus companies won't often put the effort in when there are "identical" EU/non-EU candidates for a position.
