Permit C After 5 Years?

Hi all,

I'm a non-EU national, 26-years old, been in Switzerland (Geneva) since the age of 19, studying at a university and work part-time (currently working full-time with the UN as an intern).

Until the UN job, I had Permit B Student; currently, I hold temporary carde de legitimation for the duration of my internship.

Based on my research, I heard that there are ways to apply for Permit C after five years, provided that I can prove integration (as evidenced by A2 language certification, absence of debt/criminal record and a very convincing letter).

Is this correct? I'm really considering this option, but don't want to rush into anything without knowing what the risks are.

Thanks,
George

Yes, but years as a student don't count.

Re: Permit C After 5 Years?

I've heard someone said that in Kanton Geneva, they count since you first come to Switzerland, means I think it is counted from the time you were a student. I also heard that in Kanton Luzern, they count since you move there. Anyway, the correct aswer is from your Gemeide. Have you asked them first ?

Re: Permit C After 5 Years?

Ooooh! This especially is interesting to me as I'm planning to apply for a PhD some time soon, hopefully in Geneva (but definitely in the French speaking parts). Please if you receive a reply, let me know. I'm oooold so I'd like to be as fast as possible regarding permits and citizenship.

Re: Permit C After 5 Years?

From what I know, the 5 years rule apply to EU citizens - after 5 years of b permit, you can apply (actually, they automatically deliver) the C permit.

For all other citizenships - it is 10 years rather than 5.

Re: Permit C After 5 Years?

I'm U.S. and got mine after 5 years with a B permit. No tests or investigations, they just gave it to me. Canton Vaud. That was several years ago (2006), have things changed?

Added: If I remember correctly I had to get a paper showing that there were no poursuites against me. That was all.

Re: Permit C After 5 Years?

good point, Mud.
There must be a list of "c" after five years, and a list for a longer (10) wait.
I am sure that the federal appropriate site give all the info... am just too lazy to google it now.

just wish that the federal authorities would deliver a green card as easily...
