B permit for Canadian citizen, average salary for hardware engineer

Hello,everybody!

I'm a Romanian citizen, a new EU member, and I live with my husband, a Canadian citizen, in my country. We'll move soon to Switzerland due to a job offer my husband got from a company located near Zurich.

Can he apply a B permit from the beginning, is there any great risk in giving up the job he has here before he is given the approval from Swiss authorities? Are you familiar with any similar cases in which Canadian citizens were refused the work permit in Switzerland? Is there a limited number of permits issued in each canton?

We wouldn't like to fight a lot and suffer for this, in case of a great risk, since we are expecting our first baby in the months to come.

Can my husband apply for the residence permit here, in Romania, or he should apply there, in person?
May company help with it, regardless of its small size?

Will I be able to go there with my husband even though I won't be working there? Does Switzerland recognize academic diplomas issued in Eastern Europe? I'd like to keep my teaching job, if possible.

What's the average salary for an experienced Design hardware engineer with at least 15 years of work and awards? Will 8-10.000 CHF be enough for our family to live in Zurich?

Thanks a lot for answering my questions.
All my best,
Maria

canada being not a member of the EU is subject to limited quota. Quota varies from job to job and from Canton to Canton and the company has to prove that they cannot find in the EU or in Switzerland personnel with his qualification, so it can be difficult. He cannot apply for it himself. His company should do it for him. I would suggest he doesn't quit his job before he gets a working permit here. let's say its a safety net to fall back on in case his permit request gets denied.
As for how much you need to survive in Zürich, a lot of swiss family survive on less than 8000 Sfr/month.

Re: B permit for Canadian citizen, average salary for hardware engineer

I am a Canadian PhD student in Lausanne at EPFL. I also have a B permit. I applied for the permit when I got here. I am not aware of any case where some one had been denied a permit once he had a job offer/ employment contract signed.
In terms of salary, some one in the same field could answer your question better. What I learn't at this forum and talking to other people is that sometime you sign up a contract thinking that you are getting a really good salary, but when you start working and realize that you are getting less than what others are making in a similar job. So do your home work before signing any contract.
Also finding an accomodation could be pain in the neck. So talk to your company to see if they will provide some kind of temporary accomodation untill you find your own. Also you need to look into health insurance. That could be some where between CHF200-300 /person/month. For students its less.
Hope this will help answer some of your questions.

PhD is not considered as employment...you're technically a student. But working as a design engineer or whatever, he is subjected to a limited quota

I am not sure as we have to sign a contract of employment and we work on salary.
