Hello, new to the forums! Was browsing a few other threads about gay partners moving to Switzerland from the U.S. but had a few more questions:

My partner of 6 years recently got a job offer from a company in Basel. They have instructed him to submit his visa application at the local embassy here in Washington DC (they have submitted paperwork already on their end), but they said I should not submit an application because it would be rejected.

Do I need to wait for his visa to be issued first before applying for a dependent visa? I don't intend to work, and my partner will be financially responsible for me. I'm not very sure of what the process will be. Can I move with him and then apply for a visa?

Sorry for the deluge of questions! I'm so excited to move to Switzerland, I just bought some software to learn German! I'm hopeful that I can figure out how to apply for a visa on these forums, thanks everyone!

I understand if your partner is prepared to state he will be responsible for you and all your financial needs, then it should be relatively routine. Of course, once you're here you can look for something - despite the economic climate - but worry about that once you're on terra firma.

If you are legally a couple (not actually married, but united ? don't know the term in English, it's pacsé in French) then I don't see why there should be an issue ?
The law was voted here about 5 years ago to legally recognize couples (regardless of gender)

I don't see why you shouldn't apply at the same time. I applied for a financial dependant permit at the same time as I applied for my permit and they were processed together. Just to be sure, why don't you simply call the visa section at the Swiss embassy and ask them.

It's PACS in French - pacte civil de solidarité, which means a civil partnership.
