Never tried, as it would have been illegal to do so. Had no problem entering/leaving Canada with my Swiss passport, though.

If you are a US citizen, you MUST us your US passport to enter/leave the US.

Tom
A friend of mine always enters with his Swiss passport, but I think he is somehow "under the radar" in this regard. He has not lived in the US
for over 30 years.

I meant now that you have renounced your US citizenship (or did I misunderstand?)
Haven't been since, and have no current plans to do so for a few years.

Have you ever had difficulty entering/leaving the US on a Swiss passport? Or because they don't list your place of birth, just your heimatort, do they not realize you were born American?
I've read extensively about dual citizenships for quite a few countries including renouncing citizenship, etc. More of a curiosity than anything else, in that it's not part of my profession or anything.

I do remember reading that technically you should NOT have problems entering the US once you renounce your US citizenship, in that the US doesn't "hold it against you" so to speak and assuming you comply with visas regs, etc. However, in practice, I've never read anything from anyone about this.

Same here, but....since most of the time those who have left are treated a bit like traitors, I do wonder if there is a hassle associated with travelling there on a different passport (assuming one has given up US citizenship).

I think our biggest "test case market study group" (lol) for this would probably be people who left the US for Canada during the Vietnam draft.

To me the main reasons would be that I would be allowed to vote and I would not be restricted to leave the country and risk losing my C permit.

What speaks against it is the degrading process that they have in my Gemeinde.
What do you mean by degrading process ?

Does anyone know this one? The rule is that one has to be here at least 12 years plus certain cantonal rules.

I lived here 4 years and left, but I am here again since 5 years. Does
anyone know if the first 4 years count towards the overall 12?
Ask the Federal Office in Berne for an update on this one.

Did you find out? My partner also lived 3 years in Switzerland left and lived in UK for 9 months then back to Switzerland for 5 years.
We later learnt that the first 3 years weren't counted anymore (towards permit or naturalization)

Has this changed now?
