I am a recent graduate contemplating doing a one year internship in switzerland. I believe I will need an L permit. The internship offers a very modest stipend so i will need to supplement my income. Is it possible to get a side job, waitressing, bartending, etc while on the L permit and already working full time in an internship? Does anyone have any experience with this? Thanks.

Are you Welsh? Or for that matter an EU citizen? If so then the answer is you will get a new EU B permit which offers you the freedom to do what you want BUT you will need to ask your employer if you are allowed. Further you are not able to earn more than ca 20K in any year with the jobs on the side otherwise you will need to pay social contributions on the earnings and that will potentially cause the employer some problems...

thanks for replying so promptly Richard. I am not an EU citizen, can I still work on the side? I definitely will not be making 20 k a year. Be grateful for more input from you...whether or not i take the internship is contingent on whether i can work on the side to make enough money to live really.
