Does a EU passport help?

Im Australian and my dad was born in the UK so i can get a UK Passport.. will this help me to work and live in CH?
Im 18 and finish year 12 in December 2008 so I am also looking into studying in CH... Would it be easier if I decided to study rather than work?
I was in CH for a year in 2006 and my boyfriend and I would like to live together, the easier option would be if he moved to Australia in terms of getting a visa.. but as i speak german and know about the culture and love luzern, it would be better for me to move to CH... but I would rather not marry him to gain residency, i'm way too young!!
Any info and help is much appreciated

Hi Lob, Am I slow to day or is this some form of cryptic message...

To answer the young ladies question... Yes an EU Passport helps enormously and studying here would be a good idea if you intend to get a reasonable job. Note also there is German and then there is German and believe me German in Luzern or Bern or worst of all Wallis is not exactly German that you get taught... Studying at the ETH in Zurich would not be a bad idea and also in order to do that they are most likely going to ask you to do a German exam so you might want to be prepared...

Just be a bit careful here - a mate did just this (only with an Irish passport) and the Oz took away his citizenship. Apparently they don't allow dual nationality any more.

Re: Does a EU passport help?

That sounds a bit strange... I'm an Aussie living in Zurich, and as my parents are UK citizens I have both passports and dual nationality. I applied for this in Australia last year and neither consulate had an issue with the other. Maybe the circumstances were different? I was born in Australia so they can't really dispute that nationality...

Anyway it is a good idea to make really sure beforehand. And having both passports is great. I use the Aussie one going in and out of Australia and the EU one over here and have had absolutely no issues.

I have found the EU passport useful... When travelling in and out of Switzerland they hardly glance at it, whereas my partner (who only has Australian citizenship) has to present his permits etc.

I still had to get a residency permit - I've heard there's some changes in this area regarding residency and/or work permits for EU citizens in Switzerland, but I don't have any details yet. I'd definitely recommend reporting to the Kreisburo in your area to make sure you do everything you need to.

hope that's helpful

The circumstances were that he held dual citizenship Oz and Ireland. In returning to Oz to work he was told to give up the Irish citizenship or the Oz one. He was born in Oz.

This used to be the case but not anymore (changed in 2002 or thereabouts). Australians can share citizenship with other nations.

Yep, section 17(?) was repealed in 2002. Multiple citizenships for Australians only becomes an issue where citizenship must be relinquished as a requirement for the adopted country. (eg. Germany). It is rather academic, as after obtaining said citizenship they can immediately obtain their Oz passport back.
