My L permit valid till feb 2008 but my work is going to end in next month and I am leaving the country next month.I got a new perminent job . i have follwing questions regarding this.i request you all to post answers for my questions.
1.My new employer said they will process my B permit in july. How difficult to get a B permit for L permit holder.
2.My new employer also said he will apply B permit for my wife too(she is also software engineer in my home country). is it possible for a company to apply B permits for both wife and husband separatey?
3.Is it compusory for my wife to come on dependent b permit or is there any thing we need to show that we marraige and we both want to wok on indiavidual b permits rather dependent permits?
4.If my wife b permit rejects , is it possible to apply dependent permit once I get a B permit?

1. If I understand it correctly, you are giving up your L permit and leaving the country and then returning after a period out of Switzerland to a new employment where the contract is open and therefore eligible for a B permit. This is a fairly straighforward process but requires ferederal rather than kantonal permission so can take a few weeks.

2. If your employer has also met the criteria and offered your wife an employment contract then this would be a seperate application.

3. If your wife comes as a dependant then she will have the same residence permit as yourself but she will not have the right to work. Your employer will process the paperwork and will require birth and marriage certificates.

4. If your wife does not have an offer of employment then she can only get a dependant's permit.

Re: B permits for both wife and husband

I think SwissBob answered your question.

If she has an offer of employment from the company than she will get "her own" permit. If she is not being offered a job, then they will apply for a dependent permit for her.

With no job offer there is no independent permit for her (only the dependent one).

Re: B permits for both wife and husband

I have a related question. I am an Indian citizen, currently in India who has been offered a job in Zurich. My company is processing the work B permit for me currently. I want to take my wife and daughter along as dependents. What kind of visa would they need? Is there a dependent B permit? If yes what are the formalities?

Re: B permits for both wife and husband

The rules are slightly different for EU vs non-EU individuals. Though I don't know how different since we're only the latter. My husband and I (as citizens of the U.S.) had the following experience with B-permits:

1) My husband's employer applied for his permit here in Switzerland.
2) After that application was submitted (but before completed), my husband applied for a visa in the U.S. to travel to Switzerland (as did I)
3) Once my husband's permit application was approved in Switzerland and his visa was issued in the U.S., he came to Switzerland and was issued the B-permit.
4) He then applied for my B-permit here. I received my permit one month later.

More details by nationality are posted here:

Hi ggupta2004,
You should ask your employer to process dependents visa along with your B-permit. Then you can bring your family on the B-dependent's permit. There are no special formalities, all has to be filed and done by your employer. Ask you employer to do this. That's what they did in my case and i had to do nothing.

Re: B permits for both wife and husband

Didn't work in our case. My husband's employer said they would apply for the spouse permit. He had to do it when he arrived instead. So...all was not lost in any case.

Just be sure you have all of the right paperwork!

Re: B permits for both wife and husband

Hi All,

maybe someone can give an answer on my situation. I am a non-EU citizen, with a work permit B valid till the february 2009 for the stated employer and canton Schaffhausen. My situation is that I quit the job and now I am in the process of looking for another one.

Is my understanding correct that I can stay till the next february in Switzerland or I have to leave the country now due to the termination of my contract?

thanks a lot, t.

I think most of it has been answered, just a little gotcha for the general database if others are working on visas.

Note that immigration only ever gives out a single entry visa, even if you asked for a multiple entry one. The reason is that they would like you to actually exist before they give a multiple entry, so the first thing you do when you get to Switzerland is visit them in person and have the visa converted.

Your understanding is probably not correct. Your current residence permit is no longer valid. Depending on factors like how long you have been in Switzerland and how your kanton interpret the rules you may be able to stay while job-seeking. You need to go to the local town hall and explain the situation and see what options you have.
