Residency for self-imployed sculptor

Hallo,
I am American, married German. I live in Feldkirch, Austria, not far from Zürich. Permit for 5 y.
I want to rent atelier in Zürich and do my clay and stone art work. For fun with possibilities to sell it in the future.
Would like to have swiss residincy.
Can buy appartment, if it is necessary to get permit to live in Switzerland.
