Swiss Passport renewal time?

Hi

Does anyone know the current time that it takes for getting a Swiss passport replaced with a bio-metric one?

My wife got a new Swiss passport in November but it was not a bio-metric one and she needs either a bio-metric passport or a Visa for a tourist trip to the U.S. in the summer. Unfortunately she can not get an appointment for a visa until August which is too late.

Does anyone know if there is a fast-track system for passport renewal like there is in the U.K? I got my last U.K. passport renewed in one day.

My wife is a bit of a silly goat for leaving this so late - she would not have noticed at all unless I had checked the current U.S. regs.

I'm going to check with the renewal office but I wondered if anyone had any recent first-hand experience for themselves or a Swiss partner / spouse.

Thanks !

Re: Swiss Passport renewal time?

I should have added that she also could get her Italian passport renewed instead if that is quicker. She let that one run out and di not get it renewed despite me nagging at her to do so.

I forsee a trip to Stockerstrasse in person. I think the Italians may be more flexible but the renew time on a Swiss passport should be reasonable.

Do take into consideration the picture requirements as that is the source of the biometric information!

Re: Swiss Passport renewal time?

Why rush to get a bio-metric passport. This so called visa is just a little green form that you fill out on the plane and your picture and fingerprint is taken by the customs officer. This is no big deal as there is no rush to change the passport.I travel at least 10-12 times a year to the States and have never had a problem with my old passport.

The little green form is for the Visa Waiver programme. If you have a Swiss passport issued after October 2006 that is not a bio-metric passport then you need a full visa. The key point is that my wife's non-bio-metric passport is too new. I got my latest British non-biometric passport a couple of weeks before I too needed a biometric one and I can use it until it expires.

Re: Swiss Passport renewal time?

Fools rush in where angels fear to tread, Coolio

UK passports without biometrics nor digitised photo issued between (IIRC October 2005 and 2006) need a visa to get into the US.

Tom deffo wants himself and wifey in the visa waiver programme

Re: Swiss Passport renewal time?

Correct. I was just about to correct my statement
as I realised that the current passport was issued in November. Thanks

Thanks - I phoned the Swiss passport office just now and they said that all that is required is a visit to your Geminde, a wait of three days, a visit to the passpoot office in Zurich and then a wait of 1 to 2 weeks for the new passport. This is probably a realistic timescale knowing the efficiency of the Swiss authorities but I posted the original post in case anyone's experience suggested otherwise.

You were right about the flexibility of the Italians. I cannot get through to the Italian Consulate despite several attempts. It seems they are being flexible about actually answering their phones.

Re: Swiss Passport renewal time?

Tom, also I think if the last passport was not issued from Stockstrasse, they will show another "level" of flexibility.

Re: Swiss Passport renewal time?

Question:
Do you know where to take the bio metric pictures for the British passport in Zürich area?

I have heard that for Swiss passports you have to go the Swiss passport office for the pictures (cost 50CHF for pictures).

I got a new UK passport (biometric) earlier this year ... standard kiosk photos are valid.
