Does a family reunification visa (residence permit) allow you to work?

I moved to Zurich about a month ago using a family reunification visa. My husband has been working here for a year, and we got married in May. I obviously got into the country, and have submitted all of my paperwork, but my permit has not arrived yet (I've heard it takes 2-3 months for it to show up in the mail).
I was offered a job the other day, but I don't know if my permit will allow me to work or not.

Can anyone else who is here or knows someone here for family reunification let me know if they were able to work?

No one can answer your question until you receive the permit and see what it says - or maybe you have a letter confirming the permit?

Hi,

Depends on your husband's situation hence permit he is holding now...Providing this info will trigger ad-hoc answers!

If your husband has a EU-nationality then you are most likely allowed to work.
Otherwise, probably not allowed to work.

Re: Does a family reunification visa (residence permit) allow you to work?

Call your office de la population and ask them. Most often the permit is granted long before it actually arrives. In my case, they knew the type of permit I'd get even like a week after the wedding! (Husband EU-8 with 5 y B, me also EU-8, on a tourist stay back then.) Harass them a bit, if the person on the phone is not to forthcoming, call back later/the next day. If your spouse has a C, most probably you'll be able to work. If he has a B-EU, you have a huge chance, if B-non-EU, great chance still, with an L, most often not but it depends, etc. So without knowing his permit type, it's difficult to say. With knowing yours, it's a lot easier.

I'm in a similar position - waiting for my dependent permit...so, what is the "office de la population" called in the German parts of the country and how do I contact them?

You can contact your local Kreisburo (district office) or your Gemeinde (community office). Better yet, contact the Migrationsamt des Kanton Zurich (Migration Office for Zurich, as I see that's where you're based. It's on Berninastrasse. I'd recommend going earlier in the day, but they will be able to answer any of your questions.

Re: Does a family reunification visa (residence permit) allow you to work?

Great question.

Just adding another:

I'm a south american citizen married with a Swiss lady. I have my B permission (I just arrived in Switzerland) and a company asked me if I'm allowed to work without hour/day limit and if I can do business travels.

Does someone know that?

Thanks!

Just wondering, how is it possible to find a job so quickly???? Do you know the secret word? Tell me at least first letter ! =)))
If your husband has unlimited contract - the probability to work for you is very high. But you have ask "foreign office".

Re: Does a family reunification visa (residence permit) allow you to work?

One can only get a confirmation regarding work eligibility once the permit arrives. You can directly go and check with the labor office in Zurich.

http://www.awa.zh.ch/internet/vd/awa/de/home.html

When my wife's dependent B Permit visa arrived its has the following words:

Erwerbstatigkeit which means work authorization. Also checked the same with labor office.

If you are married to a Swiss citizen you can work without restriction.
