Re: Pit bull in Switzerland

As always, location, location, location. As said some C/Kantons are more tolerant than others. Many of the problems incurred in CH cities is that some people choose totally unsuitable dogs for the situation, eg a pitbull or other large breed in a small apartment with shared grounds, etc, and especially so when they are left alone all day (and bark and become destructive out of stress and boredom)- and when owners quickly let them out to do their business in the grounds before and after work - and no proper exercise. A recipe for disaster, let alone with a pitbull due to public perception.

If you have such a dog, you may have to live out of town and commute. But I'd say it could be very difficult to find suitable accommodation- and if you do live further out, who will look after your dog during the day and when you go away? Almost impossible to organise if you arrive just a few days or weeks before starting full time work?

Re: Pit bull in Switzerland

Runderwo, as wrong and as unfounded as I consider F16's antagonism to dogs to be, he has just demonstrated the kind of hostility you will encounter if you come here with your PB - even if you move to a canton where the breed is not banned/restricted. The unfortunate reality is that many people in Switzerland share his beliefs, and you will face much unpleasantness.

Are you thick-skinned enough to put up with this as a daily occurance? Do you have the resources to provide a safe environment for your dog? Given that you will be an 'outsider' here, do you think you can protect your dog from those who are hostile to him? And most importantly: is it fair to put your loyal friend through this?

I wish prevailing attitudes were different here, but this is the reality many dog owners face - owners of listed breeds most especially.

Please think very carefully before commiting to a move to Switzerland - and then think twice again.

I sincerely wish you and your dog all the best.

Re: Pit bull in Switzerland

To be fair, I do not read F16's post as antagonistic to dogs at all. Many of us love dogs, have always kept dogs and yet sometimes feel that the dog's place in the 'chain' seems to have become distorted for some people (not related to this thread in particular).
