Anyone know how to determine a rabbit's gender?

Tomorrow we are getting a rabbit from one of my daughter's coworkers (1 year old). Unfortunately, he doesn't know the sex, and as we already have a female, we don't want to mix them if a male before sterilization (we like eating rabbit, but not our pets

).

Of course, I could just pass by the vet and ask for a quick control, and an appointment if needed, but that depends if they have the time.

Thoughts?

You already know the gender of one. Stick 'em both in a cage and it shouldn't take long to determine the (lack of) hormones of the other.

But really, if it concerns you, I'd take a quick trip to the vet.

If you turn them to the belly, it will be obvious...

The males have testicles which are not covered with fur, contrary to the female rabbits. If still in doubt, you can gently press on it, and then the appendix will come out.

As m_ says at 1 year old you should be able to see the bunny testicles if it's a boy bunny.

The famous rabbit ventriloquist "Bright Eyes Jr." who does human voices with that weird looking guy puppet mounted over his shoulder. Doesn't fool me.

Tom,

Female rabbits look very similar to males and its best to get an expert /professional opinion. Keep them separate in the meantime. Trust me on this.

I tried to determine the sex of an adopted rabbit once, and I ended up with 8 little bunnies.

I stopped by the vet and made an appointment for this afternoon, just to be sure!

If bunny is one year old, it shouldn't be that hard to know if its a she or a he.

Our first bunny is now gender confused, as for the first 6 months of HIS life we called HIM Josie

Then the testicles dropped, his voice got lower,he grew fur where there was no fur before etc.. so we knew it was a boy

Later we got a female bunny but that wasn't hard to see, you can tell by her head alone she is a girl.

Josie's the white one, Joske the grey

hehe, I did the same. It is a little graphic, but still nowhere near the infamous anal gland thread
