Bird food - where to find it in summer

Hello - we have been feeding the birds through the winter and wanted to keep going through the summer as recommended by the RSPB. However we can not find bird food any where. Does anyone know of where bird food is sold during summer time (near Zurich).
Thanks

I had always thought you werent really supposed to feed birds in the summer - as it was better for them to rely on naturally available foodstuffs (insects and the like).
I checked the RSPB website and it suggests you are careful about what you do feed birds in the summer, if you opt to do so (no peanuts for example). They suggest using fruit (apples, pears, bananas) or soaked dried fruit - which might save you the hassle of finding bird seed.

It's worth asking at your local Landi. Although there's probably none on display, I'll reckon there's a good chance they'll still have stocks from last winter in their warehouse.
Don't think it's so necessary to put anything out, other than a few old bits of dry bread, and some fruit and veg scraps.

Thanks for that - I think we will hang out some fruit for them. Hopefully they will enjoy that. the web site RSPB was really good.

Yep - I get mine at the Landi, year round. You can buy it in bulk - however much you want. We buy the whole sack - maybe 25-30kg. IIRC, it's about a Frank per kilo when bought this way.

And yes, I know I shouldn't feed the birds during the summer... but I do love to watch them. Clearly I need to get out more...

(And we have a pact. I feed the birds, they leave my berries and cherries alone. )

It's a bit away from Zurich, but Dehner garden centres (http://www.dehner.de/) just over the border in Germany (Weil, Singen, or Friedrichshafen) have a great selection of bird food - Peanuts (whole and chopped), shelled sunflower seeds (no mess!), niger seeds, dried mealworms, plus the usual seed mixes you can buy here.

You can also get live mealworms from http://www.reptile-food.ch/home/ - order online, or collect from their shop in Dubendorf).

Thank goodness I'm not the only one continuing to feed the birds! I just love watching them and quite frankly they probably can use all the help they can get to feed all those hungry lil mouths!
