The other scenario with the rabbits is the martens killed them just "for the pleasure". It is fairly well documented that they often kill just for the fun and not only to eat.

The cat population around here ebbs and flows with the appearance of the martens. When we see the "cat missing" posters, we know they are back.

Yes.

The ZH zoo lost their hyacinth macaws a couple of years back. I believe it was martins that were blamed, and standard practice for large bird enclosures is metal reinforced netting.

Citation? Contrary to our own projection, it's exceedingly rare for animals to kill for "pleasure". In defence, for later, sure. But how can you define that the animal derived enjoyment from the kill alone?
